For all have sinned and are made destitute of the glory of God.
-Romans 3:23
We have traveled this season of preparation with a new guide. Judas Iscariot, as revealed by Tosca, has led us into the inner circle so we could sit a little nearer, and listen a little more closely to Jesus.
What have we heard? What whispers have stirred our hearts?
On the eve of Easter I see the humanity and holiness of Christ in deeper, richer hues. I hear his cry of, “My God, why have you forsaken me?” as the completion of his incarnation. What human heart has not howled, “Why?”
I also now see why Judas is part of the Passion story that God wrote. Would not the ending have been the same without a betrayer? Did we need a villain who would deliver a death sentence with a kiss?
Yes.
I need Judas. I need to see not only the humanity of Christ, but the humanity of Judas. I need to fathom the truth of the Passion — the truth of “I am.”
Not only is Jesus God, but I am Judas, a traitor destitute of God’s glory outside of grace.
